Marriage is one of the happiest times in most people's lives. If you have found someone that you want to spend your life with, then following the proper procedures as you begin your lives together will get you off to the right start. Obtaining a marriage license takes care of much of the legal requirements necessary before you can get hitched.

Determine your eligibility for marriage. If you were previously married, you will need the date of divorce or death of your prior spouse. Same sex marriages are not permitted in Idaho. Cousin marriages are also not permitted.

Gather the necessary documents. You will need your Social Security card, your birth certificate, and a driver's license or other state identification card bearing your photograph. Bring these documents with you when you apply for a marriage license.

Bring a parent or legal guardian if you are less than 18 years of age. You must also have a written parental consent on the Affidavit of Consent to Marriage of Minor. If you are under 16, you will also require a court order.

Go to the Recorder's office in your town, which is where marriage licenses are issued. In most, if not all instances, your Recorder's office will be located in the city hall. Find out the specifics for your location by checking either the phone book or your town's website.

Read and sign the premarital AIDS educational pamphlet, as is required by Idaho Code 32-412A.

Pay the fee, which is only accepted in cash. On weekdays, the fee is $28. On weekends, the fee is $45.

Get married! Unlike those of many other states, an Idaho marriage license does not expire. You can take as much time as you need to get married.
